What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

“What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?” is a question that many children are asked. For some, it is a doctor, fireman, superhero, or movie star. I’m guessing most people don’t say “entrepreneur “. Today more individuals think about owning their own business. They don’t realize the work that’s necessary to have a successful business. Influencers and celebrities make business sound glamourous, but for most entrepreneurs it’s hard work and long hours. How do you prepare for that?

Entrepreneurs go into the business with a passion for something that they love to do, or what they’re interested in. When they find themselves working 24/7,  more frustrated than expected, the question “what am I doing, is this what I want?” comes to mind. Often it is about not having the right guidance on where and how to invest their efforts.

“Building a business is hard. And what makes it hard is everything that happens every day at every moment. That’s why I talk a lot about self-awareness and loving the process.

When you do something for money, you quit. When you do it because you love it, you do it forever.”

Gary Vaynerchuk

Owners do what they have a passion for, what they love. After a while the money becomes secondary. If you’re not pleased looking at yourself in the mirror and going through your day you should be asking yourself “why?”. Of course, you will have tough times and challenges that make you question yourself. It’s the strength of the business and passion that gets you through challenges.

Mark Wardell suggests, “…Nearly all business challenges are really symptoms of a deeper problem – a weakness in the core strength of the business.”

I was in a discussion recently with a potential client looking at how I could assist their business to become self-sustaining, removing the reliance on the owners. We all have busy schedules, but when they told me they didn’t have time to do the work needed for the business I was concerned. I didn’t hear a willingness to work to achieve the success they’re looking for. What they were saying was they were not willing to invest the time in their business.

One of the reasons I started my consulting business was following an event series I created for entrepreneurs some years ago. I brought in experts to share their knowledge and tools. It became evident that certain business owners don’t know what they don’t know, and may not necessarily have the essential resources needed. Others think they can do it all on their own, some can, but not usually.

“We’ve heard the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein

Without making changes and doing work on your business that’s exactly what you’d be doing. Business success is about making changes involving the right people, processes, and systems. Certain responsibilities are given to others involved in the business, employees, contractors, or outsourced workers. This allows you to remove the burden of working 24/7 from the owner.  Working on your business can be rewarding when you’re not doing everything yourself. Business owners can step back, do less work, make more money and those childhood dreams come true.
